Taking First Amendment Retaliation to the Extreme

During a worship service in Jersey City, where Governor Phil Murphy was set to endorse Jim McGreevey, an unsettling and unlawful incident unfolded. Just moments after performing two pieces on the piano as a prelude to the service, a congregant was sitting silently in a pew, praying, when two Jersey City police officers suddenly approached.

One officer refused to identify himself, while the other made a vague but ominous statement: “I know what you’re here for.” When the congregant calmly responded, “I’m here to pray,” the officers proceeded to go hands-on, forcibly and violently removing him from the church—all because Governor Murphy and former Governor Jim McGreevey did not want him present at the service.

This shocking abuse of power was allegedly ordered by McGreevey himself, who appears to believe he already controls Jersey City and can direct law enforcement to silence those who hold him accountable. A video of the incident, showing exactly what transpired, is included below.

This blatant disregard for constitutional rights and religious freedom raises serious concerns about the influence politicians wield over law enforcement and the lengths to which they will go to suppress dissent.
